As an Oblate of Mary Immaculate I am always sensitive to any images of Our Blessed Mather. In the Oblate Church in Buffalo I found two statues that got my attention. The first is the statue of Our Lady of Hope. We are used to seeing Mary with the Baby Jesus, here she is presented while holding a cross. The cross in her hands is our hope. Without the cross of Christ our life would be hopeless. I like this statue as it reminds me of our Oblate habit. St Eugene wanted us to wear a cassock with a cross. Looking at the Blessed Virgin I felt even a closer link between her and us, her Oblates.
The second statue I came across here, is the statue of Our Lady of Divine Providence. This time Mary is shown with her little Son, but how different the scene is to what we are used to. Jesus doesn’t look very majestic, he is like all children playing on the laps of their mums. The statue shows him falling asleep, however in the pose we can recognize another scene from his life. How much this little boy sleeping on his mother’s laps reminds us of Pieta when his dead body was taken down from the cross and placed in the same arms of his Mother. Mary in the statue here seems to be foreseeing the painful future to come. It is going to be a painful event but in the Divine Providence it will be a life giving moment for all sinners on the Earth.
